Today is World Book Day! Although we are not linked up to the UK event here in St. Lucia (wouldn’t it be wonderful if every school child got a voucher for a book?), there’s still a way to celebrate World Book Day here in the Helen of the West!
Celestial Self Development Centre is managing a project called “Raise a Reader SLU”. Participants are encouraged to bring new or gently used books to donation bins located inside Sunshine Bookstore branches. At the end of May, these books will be distributed to Kindergarten classes in Sans Souci and surrounding areas. Please visit them on Facebook to learn more, and to volunteer for the campaign.
Another donation point for books is the library at UWI Open Campus St. Lucia. The books they receive are used as collateral material for teachers as part of their lesson plans, and as reference material in the B. Ed. students’ course of study. The library also acts as a channel for donations to the Bexon school, which the UWI Alumni Association has adopted.
So don’t throw away all those books that you or your kids have outgrown! Give the gift of reading to a child just waiting to discover all the amazing stories hidden beneath the cover – donate a book today!
(thanks to 30 Days of Progress for the heads up!)
